Norris La Guardia

Fiorello LaGuardia (December 20, 1882 – September 20, 1947), known as 'Norris' to colleagues and often called 'The Little Flower,' was an Italian-American politician who served as the 99th Mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945. Born in New York City to an Italian immigrant family, LaGuardia initially worked as a lawyer and interpreter before entering politics. He became a U.S. Congressman known for his progressive politics and anti-corruption stance before his mayoral career. As mayor during the Great Depression and World War II, LaGuardia earned a national reputation as an energetic reformer who fought municipal corruption, organized crime, and Tammany Hall political machines. He modernized city services, expanded public parks and libraries, improved housing conditions, and oversaw major infrastructure projects like the construction of LaGuardia Airport. LaGuardia became famous for his visibility and accessibility, often appearing at fire scenes, investigating complaints personally, and reading comic strips on the radio during a newspaper strike. His administrative innovations and commitment to public welfare made him one of the most celebrated mayors in American history. LaGuardia Airport, opened in 1939, remains named in his honor, ensuring his legacy is visible to millions of travelers annually.
