Noor of Jordan

Noor of Jordan (born Gardiner, 1912-2007) was an American-born woman who became Queen of Jordan through her marriage to King Abdullah I, one of the most influential Arab leaders of the 20th century. Born in New Jersey to a prominent American family, she met King Abdullah during his travels and married him in 1945, converting to Islam and taking the name Noor Al-Hussein. As Queen, she played a significant role during a transformative period in Middle Eastern history, during which Jordan gained independence and navigated the complexities of the post-World War II era and the founding of Israel. Though her queenship was brief—Abdullah I was assassinated in 1951—Noor became a powerful force in ensuring the succession of her son and grandson to the Jordanian throne.
