Noble Johnson

Noble Matthew Johnson (April 18, 1881 – January 9, 1978) was a trailblazing African American actor and filmmaker who navigated the deeply segregated Hollywood industry to achieve a remarkable career spanning several decades. Beginning his film career in 1915, Johnson appeared in over 100 films, working during the silent era and into the sound era of cinema. Despite the severe limitations placed on Black actors during this period—often relegated to stereotypical roles—Johnson managed to secure more substantial and dignified parts than many of his contemporaries. He founded the Lincoln Motion Picture Company with Abraham Lincoln and other partners, one of the first Black-owned film production companies, which produced films specifically for African American audiences. Johnson's career was marked by strategic choices and dignified performances that helped challenge racial stereotypes in cinema. He continued working in Hollywood well into his later years, appearing in films and television into the 1950s. His pioneering efforts in film production and his sustained presence in Hollywood made him a significant figure in breaking down racial barriers in the entertainment industry.
