Biography

Nina Ricci (January 22, 1883 – November 23, 1970) was an Italian-born French fashion designer and businesswoman who founded one of the most prestigious fashion houses of the 20th century. Born Maria Adele Ricci in Turin, Italy, she apprenticed as a seamstress before moving to Paris as a young woman. In 1932, at age 49, Ricci established the Nina Ricci fashion house with her son Robert, launching a couture line that quickly became celebrated for its elegance, femininity, and impeccable craftsmanship. Her designs were characterized by refined sophistication, luxurious fabrics, and meticulous attention to detail. In 1948, the Nina Ricci house launched 'L'Air du Temps,' a signature perfume that became one of the most iconic fragrances of the 20th century and remains highly successful today. Despite entering the fashion industry later in life, Ricci established herself as a major figure in haute couture, competing with contemporaries like Chanel and Dior. Her brand became synonymous with timeless elegance and luxury. Ricci's legacy extends far beyond fashion—she demonstrated that success could come at any age and that feminine elegance need not compromise sophistication. The Nina Ricci brand continues to thrive as a symbol of luxury and refined beauty.
