Niles Crane
Frasier's neurotic psychiatrist brother, Emmy-winning sitcom character
Niles Cecil Crane is a fictional character from the American sitcom 'Frasier', portrayed by David Hyde Pierce across all eleven seasons from 1993 to 2004. Niles is the younger brother of protagonist Frasier Crane and represents the show's satirical exploration of upper-class pretension and neurotic perfectionism. Throughout the series, Niles is characterized by his obsessive-compulsive tendencies, impeccable fashion sense, refined artistic sensibilities, and his unrequited (later requited) love for the family's live-in physical therapist Daphne Moon. His comedic role as the embodiment of exaggerated fastidiousness and elitism provided much of the show's humor, with his elaborate vocabulary, disdain for anything he deemed common, and physical comedy creating memorable moments. Despite his snobbish exterior, Niles demonstrates genuine compassion and vulnerability, particularly in his evolution as a character and his eventual relationship with Daphne. David Hyde Pierce's portrayal became iconic, earning multiple Emmy Awards and establishing Niles as one of television's most beloved characters.

Thinking about the name
Niles
English origin
“The English surname-turned-given name derived from the Irish Niall or the Latin Nilus (the Nile River), meaning 'champion' or 'cloud.' Niles carries an aristocratic, intellectual character, popularized as a given name through the television character Niles Crane on 'Frasier.' The name strikes a sophisticated, slightly literary tone.”
