Nikolas Cruz
Perpetrator of the 2018 Parkland school shooting
Nikolas Jacob Cruz (born September 24, 1998) committed one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history on February 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, Cruz killed 17 people—14 students and 3staff members—and wounded 17 others. Cruz was a former student at the school who had been expelled due to disciplinary issues. Prior to the shooting, Cruz had exhibited numerous warning signs of potential violence, including social media posts expressing violent intent, and had been investigated by law enforcement. After the shooting, he was arrested and faced charges including 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder. In October 2018, he pleaded guilty to all charges, and in 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The Parkland shooting sparked significant national debate regarding gun control, school safety, mental health services, and law enforcement response protocols. The tragedy motivated surviving students to become prominent gun control advocates, including the formation of the Never Again MSD advocacy group. The case highlighted systemic failures in threat assessment and raised questions about how warning signs of potential violence are handled by schools and law enforcement.

Thinking about the name
Nikolas
Greek origin
“An Anglicized Greek form of Nicholas, from nikē (victory) and laos (people). Nikolas became popular in English-speaking countries in the late 20th century, striking a balance between classical roots and contemporary approachability. The -as ending gives it slight Continental flair while remaining accessible to English speakers.”
