Nimrata Nikki Haley (born January 20, 1972) is an American politician and diplomat who has held several prominent positions in state and federal government. Born in Bamberg, South Carolina, to immigrant parents from Punjab, India, Haley grew up in South Carolina and worked as an accountant before entering politics. She served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010 before being elected Governor of South Carolina, serving from 2011 to 2017. As Governor, Haley focused on economic development, education reform, and gained national prominence following her response to the Charleston church shooting in 2015, when she called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds. In 2017, President Donald Trump appointed Haley as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where she served until 2018, representing the United States on the world stage and advocating for American interests at the UN. After leaving the UN, Haley remained active in political commentary and Republican politics, becoming a prominent voice within the party. In 2024, she ran for the Republican presidential nomination before withdrawing and endorsing Trump. Her career represents the rise of women in Republican politics and demonstrates the increasing diversity of American political leadership.

Thinking about the name
Haley
English origin
“Derived from Old English 'hæl' meaning 'healthy' and 'leah' meaning 'clearing' or 'meadow,' Haley originally denoted 'a healthy clearing' or 'a whole field.' The name became widely popular as a feminine name in the late 20th century, particularly in the United States. It balances approachability with a connection to nature and wellness, making it perpetually appealing to contemporary parents.”
