Nicola Tesla
Inventor of alternating current, electrical pioneer, visionary scientist
Nikola Tesla (1856–1943), often anglicized as Nicola in some contexts, was a Serbian-American inventor and engineer whose innovations fundamentally transformed modern civilization. Born in the Austrian Empire, Tesla emigrated to the United States where he became one of history's most prolific and visionary inventors. His development and promotion of alternating current (AC) electrical systems revolutionized power distribution and overcame Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) technology, creating the electrical infrastructure that powers the modern world. Tesla's other major contributions included pioneering work in wireless transmission, X-ray technology, remote control mechanisms, and oscillators. He held over 300 patents and conceptualized innovations that wouldn't become practical for decades, including wireless energy transmission and concepts resembling modern radar. Despite his genius and cultural impact, Tesla struggled financially and died in relative obscurity. His legacy has grown exponentially in recent decades, with Tesla becoming a symbol of visionary innovation and scientific imagination. Modern electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, Inc. is named in his honor, introducing his work to contemporary audiences.
