Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022) was an American actress, singer, and dancer who became an iconic figure in television history through her role as Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek. Breaking racial and gender barriers in the 1960s, Nichols was one of the first Black women to play a non-stereotypical role in a leading television series. Her portrayal of Uhura resonated deeply with audiences and inspired generations of Black women to pursue careers in science, technology, and entertainment. Beyond acting, Nichols was a passionate advocate for NASA's space program, helping to recruit astronauts including Sally Ride and Guion Bluford Jr. After Star Trek ended, she continued her acting career in film and television while dedicating herself to civil rights activism and space exploration advocacy. Nichols appeared in multiple Star Trek films and reprised her role in subsequent Star Trek productions, cementing her legacy as a groundbreaking performer who helped transform the entertainment industry.
