Neal Armstrong
First person to walk on the Moon, Apollo 11 commander
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 30, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and developed a passion for flight from an early age. He earned his pilot's license before his driver's license and became a skilled aviator in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, Armstrong joined NASA's astronaut program and participated in the Gemini 8 mission before commanding Apollo 11. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon, achieving the culmination of the Apollo program and the Space Race. His measured demeanor, technical expertise, and calm decision-making during critical moments made him an ideal choice for this historic mission. After leaving NASA, Armstrong pursued a career in engineering and business, maintaining a private persona despite his historical significance. His legacy transcends space exploration, symbolizing human curiosity, courage, and the possibility of achieving seemingly impossible goals through innovation and dedication.

Thinking about the name
Neal
Irish origin
“Derived from the Irish Gaelic Niall, meaning 'champion' or 'cloud,' this name carries both warrior strength and poetic softness. Neal became particularly popular in English-speaking countries as a modernized spelling of the more traditional Niall. The name balances approachability with classical dignity.”
