Naya Rivera
Santana Lopez on 'Glee', powerful vocalist and LGBTQ+ representation
Naya Marie Rivera (January 12, 1987 – July 8, 2020) was an American actress, singer, and television personality who rose to prominence as Santana Lopez on the Fox musical comedy-drama series 'Glee'. Born in Valencia, California, to a Guatemalan mother and Puerto Rican father, Rivera grew up in a military family and began her entertainment career as a child actor, appearing on shows like 'The Royal Family' and 'Family Matters'. Her role as the sharp-tongued, initially antagonistic character Santana became one of the show's most beloved arcs, particularly as her character's relationship with fellow student Brittany Pierce evolved into a central romantic storyline. Beyond 'Glee', Rivera appeared in films and television shows, and released music as part of the show's cast. She was known for her powerful four-octave vocal range and her advocacy for LGBTQ+ representation in media. Tragically, Rivera drowned in Lake Piru in Ventura County, California, on July 8, 2020, at age 33. Her legacy continues through her cultural impact as a Latina actress who championed diverse storytelling in mainstream entertainment.
