Biography

Natalya Makarova (born November 21, 1940) is a legendary Russian prima ballerina who achieved international stardom during the Cold War era. Born in Leningrad, Makarova was trained at the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy and rose to prominence as a principal dancer with the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky Ballet), where she performed leading roles in classical and contemporary ballets. In 1970, at the height of her career, Makarova made the dramatic decision to defect from the Soviet Union while performing in London, seeking artistic freedom and the opportunity to work with Western choreographers and companies. Following her defection, she became a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet and later with American Ballet Theatre, where she achieved legendary status. Makarova is particularly renowned for her interpretations of classical roles, including Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty, as well as her performances in contemporary works by choreographers including Jerome Robbins and Alvin Ailey. She won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical 'On Your Toes.' Makarova's defection and subsequent international career made her an iconic figure in dance history, and her technical excellence and emotional expressiveness continue to influence dancers and choreographers worldwide. She later transitioned into directing and teaching, passing on her knowledge to new generations of ballet artists.
