Nat Turner

Leader of Southampton Rebellion (1831), enslaved preacher and freedom fighter

Biography

Nat Turner (1800-1831) was an enslaved African American preacher whose rebellion fundamentally impacted American history and consciousness regarding slavery. Born enslaved in Southampton County, Virginia, Turner was taught to read and developed a deep knowledge of the Bible, which shaped his spiritual outlook and activism. Interpreting biblical passages and experiencing visions he believed to be divine messages, Turner came to believe he was called to lead his people to freedom. On August 21, 1831, Turner led the Southampton Rebellion, also known as Nat Turner's Rebellion, in which approximately sixty enslaved and free Black people attacked white settlements in Southampton County, resulting in the deaths of approximately fifty-six white people. The rebellion was suppressed by militia and state forces; Turner evaded capture for two months before being arrested and executed by hanging on November 11, 1831. Though the rebellion was brief and ultimately unsuccessful in achieving lasting freedom, it profoundly shocked the American South and the nation, intensifying fears among white slaveholders and leading to increasingly harsh slave codes. Turner's rebellion is remembered as an act of courageous resistance against one of history's greatest moral evils. His legacy has been extensively studied, debated, and commemorated as a symbol of Black resistance, agency, and the indomitable human desire for freedom.
