Myron

Myron (c. 480–440 BCE) was one of the most celebrated sculptors of ancient Greece during the Classical period. Active primarily in Athens, he revolutionized Greek sculpture through his mastery of anatomical precision and his ability to capture dynamic motion in static bronze forms. His most famous work, the Discobolus (Discus Thrower), exemplifies his genius—the figure is frozen mid-throw, yet radiates kinetic energy and athletic prowess. Myron was known for his attention to detail and his innovative techniques in casting, which allowed him to achieve unprecedented realism in depicting musculature and movement. Though most of his original bronze works are lost, his reputation was so significant that Roman collectors commissioned marble copies, many of which survive today and inform our understanding of his artistic vision. Myron's influence on subsequent sculptural traditions in both the Hellenistic and Roman periods was profound, establishing him as a foundational figure in the history of Western art.
