Muriel Rukeyser

Muriel Rukeyser (December 15, 1913 – June 6, 1980) was an American poet, essayist, biographer, filmmaker, and activist whose work bridged modernism and social consciousness. Born in New York City to a wealthy Jewish family, Rukeyser was deeply committed to political activism throughout her life, participating in the Spanish Civil War, the labor movement, and civil rights causes. Her poetry collections, including 'Theory of Flight' and 'The Book of the Dead,' combined technical innovation with urgent social commentary, addressing themes of injustice, scientific discovery, and the interconnectedness of human experience. Rukeyser believed poetry could be a vehicle for social change and rejected the notion that art should remain separate from politics. Her biographical works on mathematicians, scientists, and historical figures reflected her conviction that poetry could illuminate human complexity across disciplines. She was also a passionate educator, teaching at Sarah Lawrence College for many years and mentoring numerous students. Her experimental documentary work and essays on form and meaning contributed to expanding conceptions of what poetry could encompass.
