Muhammad Yunus

Economist, founder of Grameen Bank, pioneer of microcredit, Nobel Peace Prize winner

Biography

Muhammad Yunus (born June 28, 1940) is a Bangladeshi economist, social entrepreneur, and Nobel laureate who revolutionized approaches to poverty alleviation through the concept of microcredit. Faced with widespread poverty in Bangladesh following the 1974 famine, Yunus began experimenting with providing small loans to poor women entrepreneurs who lacked access to traditional banking services. This simple yet powerful idea led to the founding of Grameen Bank in 1983, which has since provided microloans to millions of people, predominantly women, enabling them to start small businesses and escape poverty. Grameen Bank's model has been replicated worldwide, fundamentally changing how the global community approaches development and poverty reduction. Yunus's work demonstrated that poor people are creditworthy and that providing financial services to the poor could be both socially beneficial and financially sustainable. In 2006, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Grameen Bank for his efforts to create economic and social development from below. Beyond banking, Yunus has been an advocate for social business—enterprises dedicated to solving social problems rather than maximizing profit. His vision has inspired countless initiatives and organizations working toward sustainable development and economic empowerment of marginalized communities.
