Moss Hart

Moss Hart (October 24, 1904 – December 20, 1961) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and director who became one of the most successful theatrical figures of the 20th century. Born in the Bronx, Hart rose from poverty to become a central figure in Broadway's golden age. He initially collaborated with George S. Kaufman, creating comedic masterpieces including 'You Can't Take It with You' (which won the Pulitzer Prize), 'The Man Who Came to Dinner,' and 'Once in a Lifetime.' These collaborations established Hart's reputation for witty dialogue, sophisticated humor, and sharp social satire. He later worked on major musicals including 'Guys and Dolls' (1950) and 'My Fair Lady' (1956), directing the latter's legendary original Broadway production. Hart's directorial vision brought precision and theatrical innovation to musical theater, influencing generations of directors. Beyond Broadway, he worked in Hollywood, writing screenplays and contributing to major films. His autobiography 'Act One' (published posthumously in 1959) became a beloved classic account of theatrical life and success. Hart's influence on American comedy, musical theater, and stagecraft remains profound, with his works continuing to be performed worldwide.
