Mortimer Wheeler

Sir Robert Eric Mortimer Wheeler (1890–1976) was a British archaeologist whose methodological innovations fundamentally transformed archaeological practice in the 20th century. He pioneered stratigraphic excavation techniques that allowed archaeologists to understand the chronological relationships between artifacts and soil layers with unprecedented precision. Wheeler's excavations across Britain, India, and the Mediterranean were marked by meticulous documentation and innovative approaches.
