Mohammad Javad Zarif (born January 11, 1960) is an Iranian diplomat, politician, and academic who served as Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2015 to 2021, representing Iran during critical diplomatic negotiations. Born in Tehran, Zarif is known for his extensive education, speaking multiple languages fluently including English, French, Arabic, and Russian. He earned degrees from San Francisco State University and the University of Denver, establishing himself as an intellectual in diplomatic circles. Zarif served as Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations from 2002 to 2007 before returning to diplomatic service. As Foreign Minister under President Hassan Rouhani, he played a central role as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed in 2015, a landmark agreement limiting Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
