Minerva Teichert

Minerva Teichert (January 21, 1888 – August 8, 1976) was an American painter, muralist, and sculptor who became one of the most accomplished female artists of the 20th century. Born in Idaho to Latter-day Saint (LDS) parents, Teichert developed her artistic talent from a young age and pursued formal art education at universities and through travel and study abroad. She became renowned for her large-scale murals that often depicted historical, religious, and cultural themes, with a particular emphasis on the contributions of women and Native American peoples—subjects frequently overlooked in mainstream art of her time. Teichert's murals appear in public buildings, including the Idaho State Capitol and LDS temples, and are characterized by their scale, color, and historical significance. Her work was notable for its progressive themes and representation of marginalized groups, making her a pioneering figure in American art. Despite her significant accomplishments, Teichert remained relatively less famous than some of her male contemporaries, a reflection of the gender biases in the art world during her lifetime.
