Millicent Fawcett
Women's suffrage leader, achieved voting rights for British women
Millicent Garrett Fawcett (June 11, 1847 – August 5, 1929) was a British feminist, political leader, and women's rights activist who became one of the most prominent figures in the British suffrage movement. Born into an intellectual and politically engaged family, Fawcett received an education unusual for women of her era and early demonstrated her commitment to women's rights. She married Henry Fawcett, a blind economist and Member of Parliament, and through this partnership became increasingly involved in political activism. Following her husband's death in 1884, Fawcett rose to national prominence by becoming president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) in 1890, a position she held for nearly two decades. Under her leadership, the NUWSS became the largest and most influential suffrage organization in Britain, advocating through constitutional and peaceful means for women's voting rights. Fawcett's strategic leadership proved crucial; she navigated the tensions between militant suffragettes and constitutional suffragists, maintaining her organization's focus and moral authority while the broader suffrage movement evolved. Her decades of advocacy, alongside broader social changes and women's contributions during World War I, contributed to the achievement of partial women's suffrage in 1918 and equal voting rights in 1928. Fawcett wrote extensively on women's rights and economics, and her intellectual contributions complemented her political activism. Her legacy encompasses not only the tangible achievement of voting rights but also the establishment of democratic principles that women's voices deserve political representation.

Thinking about the name
Millie
English origin
“Originally a diminutive of Millicent, Amelia, or Emily, Millie has evolved into a standalone name with its own distinct identity. It combines vintage appeal with accessibility, evoking early 20th-century charm while feeling fresh and youthful. The name strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary sensibility.”
