Mikhail Baryshnikov
Greatest male ballet dancer of his generation, Cold War defection
Mikhail Nikolayevich Baryshnikov (born January 27, 1948) is a Soviet-born American ballet dancer and choreographer considered one of the most talented male ballet dancers in history. Born in Riga, Latvia (then Soviet Union), Baryshnikov trained at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, one of the world's most prestigious ballet schools. He became a principal dancer with the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky Theatre) in Leningrad and achieved international fame through tours and performances. In 1974, at the height of his career, he defected from the Soviet Union while on tour in Canada, a dramatic escape that captured international attention during the Cold War. He joined American Ballet Theatre and later the New York City Ballet, performing leading roles in classical and contemporary works. Baryshnikov is celebrated for his extraordinary technical ability, remarkable jumps, expressive dancing, and versatility across ballet styles. Beyond ballet, he pursued acting, appearing in films and television, including the television series 'Sex and the City.' He has also been a prolific choreographer, creating numerous original works. Baryshnikov founded the Mikhail Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, promoting interdisciplinary artistic collaboration and education.

Thinking about the name
Mikhail
Russian origin
“The Russian form of Michael, derived from the Hebrew meaning 'who is like God.' Mikhail carries centuries of Russian imperial and literary prestige, famously borne by Russian composers and political figures. For anglophone parents, the name conveys cosmopolitan sophistication and Slavic heritage.”
