Michael Dell
Founder of Dell Technologies, technology innovator
Michael Saul Dell (born February 23, 1965) is an American technology entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded Dell Computer Corporation in 1984 while still a student at the University of Texas at Austin. Starting with just $1,000, Dell revolutionized the personal computer industry by pioneering the direct-to-consumer sales model, bypassing traditional retailers and allowing customers to customize their computers. This innovative approach enabled Dell to undercut competitors on price while maintaining higher profit margins. By the 1990s, Dell Computer had become one of the world's leading PC manufacturers, and Michael Dell was recognized as one of the youngest self-made billionaires. He served as CEO for most of the company's history, stepping down briefly before returning in 2007. In 2013, Dell took the company private in a $24.9 billion leveraged buyout, one of the largest in history. He later merged Dell with EMC Corporation, forming Dell Technologies. Beyond business, Dell has become a significant philanthropist, pledging substantial portions of his wealth to education and global health initiatives through the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.

Thinking about the name
Dell
English origin
“A short, punchy name derived from the Old English 'dell,' meaning a small valley or hollow. Dell gained recognition as both a surname and given name in the early 20th century, often used for boys with a modern, efficient sound. The name evokes simplicity and natural landscape imagery, with a distinctly American no-nonsense charm.”
