Merlin Jay Olsen (September 15, 1940 – March 11, 2010) was an American football player and television personality who became one of the most decorated defensive linemen in NFL history. Drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1962, Olsen spent his entire 15-season career with the team, earning fourteen Pro Bowl selections and multiple All-Pro honors. As part of the legendary Rams defensive line known as the 'Fearsome Foursome,' Olsen was instrumental in establishing the team as a defensive powerhouse during the 1960s and 1970s. His combination of size, strength, intelligence, and technique made him nearly impossible to block. After retiring from football, Olsen transitioned successfully into broadcasting and acting, becoming the lead color commentator for NFL games on NBC and appearing in television shows and films. He was particularly beloved for his work on the television series Little House on the Prairie, where he played Jonathan Garvey. Olsen was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982, recognizing his extraordinary impact on the sport. His post-football career demonstrated his versatility and charisma, making him one of the first athletes to successfully transition to mainstream entertainment while maintaining credibility as a sports analyst.
