Maxine Powell

Maxine Powell (November 3, 1914 – January 24, 2013) was an influential American choreographer, vocal coach, and etiquette instructor who played a crucial but often unrecognized role in shaping the Motown sound and the success of its biggest stars. Born in Harlem, New York, Powell initially pursued a career in dance and theater before joining Berry Gordy's Motown Records in Detroit. At Motown, she established the 'Artist Development Department' where she trained the label's performers in choreography, stage presence, etiquette, and vocal technique. Powell worked extensively with iconic groups including The Supremes, The Temptations, The Marvelettes, and Stevie Wonder, refining their performances to achieve the sophisticated, polished presentation that became synonymous with Motown. She understood that in an era of segregation, Black performers needed to be impeccably presented to break through barriers and win over diverse audiences. Her mentorship transformed raw talent into world-class entertainers who could captivate audiences on any stage, from nightclubs to major concert halls. Powell's legacy extends far beyond choreography; she was instrumental in creating the infrastructure of professionalism and excellence that allowed Motown artists to achieve unprecedented crossover success and cultural impact.
