Matteo Renzi
Former Prime Minister of Italy, political reformer
Matteo Renzi is an Italian politician and member of the Democratic Party (Partito Democratico) who served as Prime Minister of Italy from February 2014 to December 2016. At age 39, he became one of Italy's youngest prime ministers. Renzi's tenure was marked by ambitious reforms aimed at modernizing Italy's government, labor market, and economy during a period of economic recovery following the eurozone crisis. He pursued constitutional reforms, job market liberalization, and efforts to strengthen the EU. His government implemented the Jobs Act, designed to increase labor market flexibility and reduce unemployment. However, his proposed constitutional referendum in 2016 on reducing the power of the Senate faced significant opposition, and his defeat in that referendum led to his resignation. After leaving office, Renzi remained influential in Italian politics, briefly leading Italia Viva, a centrist political party. His career reflects the challenges and complexities of European politics during the post-crisis period.
