Mathis Wackernagel

Mathis Wackernagel (born 1962) is a Swiss-American sustainability researcher and co-creator of the ecological footprint framework, a pivotal tool in environmental science. Educated at the University of British Columbia, Wackernagel developed the ecological footprint concept with William Rees in the early 1990s as a means to quantify humanity's demand on natural resources and compare it to Earth's regenerative capacity. This groundbreaking methodology has become instrumental in environmental policy and corporate sustainability initiatives worldwide.
