Marylynn Smith
LPGA founder, 13 major golf championships, women's golf pioneer
Marylynn Smith (March 14, 1929 – August 4, 2019) was an American professional golfer and one of the founding members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). Born in Topeka, Kansas, Smith emerged as a dominant force in women's golf during the 1950s and 1960s, winning 21 LPGA Tour events and 13 major championships, including two U.S. Women's Opens. She was instrumental in the early development of professional women's golf, competing during an era when opportunities for female athletes were severely limited. Smith's tenacity and skill helped legitimize women's professional sports at a time when cultural attitudes were shifting only gradually. Her competitive spirit and longevity in the sport—she competed professionally into her sixties—made her a role model for subsequent generations of female golfers. Smith was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1984, cementing her legacy as one of golf's pioneers.

Thinking about the name
Marylynn
English origin
“A doubled-consonant variation of Marylyn, Marylynn adds visual weight and formality to the name. The extra 'n' was a common embellishment in mid-century American naming, suggesting sophistication and careful attention to family naming traditions.”
