Martina Hingis (born September 30, 1980) is a Swiss former professional tennis player and one of the most successful tennis players of the 1990s. Born in Košice, Czechoslovakia, to a Slovak tennis player mother, Hingis grew up in Switzerland and showed exceptional promise from childhood. She became the youngest Grand Slam champion in the Open Era at age 16 when she won the 1997 Australian Open and became the world No. 1 ranking holder at just 16 years old. Over her career, Hingis won five Grand Slam singles titles, 13 Grand Slam doubles titles, and numerous other tournaments. Known for her exceptional court sense, footwork, and tactical intelligence, she was a dominant force in women's tennis during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Though a back injury forced her to retire in 2003, she made a comeback in doubles tennis starting in 2006. Hingis's precocious talent and early dominance made her a global icon in tennis and inspired a generation of young players.
