Marquis Terell Jackson Williams
Rapper known for melodic style and streaming success; cultural impact on Gen Z
Marquis Terell Jackson Williams, professionally known as Juice WRLD (December 2, 1998 – December 8, 2019) was an American rapper, singer, and songwriter who rose to prominence in the late 2010s with his emotionally vulnerable approach to hip-hop and melodic rap. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Juice WRLD released his debut album 'Goodbye & Good Riddance' in 2018, featuring the hit single 'Lucid Dreams,' which became a generational anthem and established him as a rising star. His music blended rap with singing, addressing themes of depression, anxiety, and heartbreak with an authenticity that resonated particularly with younger audiences. Despite his rapid ascent and commercial success—including streaming billions and major label support—Juice WRLD struggled publicly with substance abuse and mental health challenges. He released his second album 'Death Race for Love' in 2019 and was working on his third album at the time of his death from a seizure at Chicago's Midway Airport. Though his career was cut tragically short at age 21, Juice WRLD's influence on melodic rap and his openness about mental health left a lasting impact on hip-hop culture and inspired discussions about artist wellbeing.

Thinking about the name
Marquis
French origin
“Directly from French marquis, the title of a nobleman ranking between an earl and a duke, from the Old French marche (border). Marquis as a given name emerged in African American communities in the 1960s-70s, drawing on the historical glamour and authority of nobility. It projects confidence and distinction.”
