Born in Clovis, New Mexico, Maria Elena was working as a receptionist at Peer-Southern music publishing when she met and married Buddy Holly in 1958. During their brief marriage, she collaborated with Buddy on his music and provided creative input on his arrangements. Following Buddy's tragic death in the 1959 'Day the Music Died' plane crash, Maria Elena dedicated herself to preserving his legacy and continuing her own musical career.
