Margherita Hack
Astrophysicist, director of Trieste Observatory, stellar spectroscopy
Margherita Hack (June 12, 1922 – June 29, 2013) was an Italian astrophysicist and director of the Trieste Astronomical Observatory, one of the most accomplished female scientists of the 20th century. Born in Florence, she earned her degree in physics from the University of Florence during World War II and began her astronomical research career during a time when few women pursued scientific fields. As director of the Trieste Observatory from 1964 to 1987, she transformed it into a leading research institution and mentored numerous young scientists. Hack specialized in stellar spectroscopy and made important discoveries regarding variable stars and stellar characteristics. She published over 200 scientific papers and was instrumental in the study of X-ray astronomy. Beyond her scientific achievements, Hack was a passionate advocate for science education, atheism, and social progress, becoming an intellectual voice in Italian society. She remained active in research and public education well into her nineties. Hack's legacy as a pioneer for women in science and her enduring contributions to astrophysics make her one of Italy's most distinguished scientists.

Thinking about the name
Margherita
Italian origin
“The Italian form of Margaret, derived from the Latin margarita meaning 'pearl,' and also the Italian word for daisy flower. Margherita carries romantic, Mediterranean elegance while maintaining the precious pearl symbolism of its origin. Famously associated with the Margherita pizza, named to honor Queen Margherita of Italy in 1889.”
