Margarita Tereshkova
First woman in space, 1963 Vostok 6 mission
Valentina Tereshkova (born March 6, 1935) is a Soviet cosmonaut, engineer, and politician who made history as the first woman in space. On June 16, 1963, she launched aboard Vostok 6, completing 48 orbits around Earth and spending nearly three days in space. Her mission was a landmark achievement during the Space Race and demonstrated Soviet technological superiority while simultaneously proving that women were capable of undertaking the most demanding and dangerous missions. Before becoming a cosmonaut, Tereshkova worked as a textile factory worker and was an accomplished parachutist, qualities that helped her selection into the Soviet space program. Her successful mission paved the way for future women in space exploration and made her an international icon of female achievement in science and technology. After her spaceflight, Tereshkova became a Soviet politician and has remained active in public life for decades. Her legacy extends beyond space exploration to symbolize women's potential in STEM fields and her achievement remains one of the most significant milestones in human space exploration history.
