Marco van Basten
AC Milan striker, 3x Ballon d'Or winner, 1988 Euro champion
Marco van Basten (born October 31, 1964) is a Dutch former professional footballer widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history. Playing primarily for Ajax and AC Milan, van Basten revolutionized the striker position with his technical skill, intelligence, and clinical finishing. At AC Milan, he formed a devastating partnership with fellow legend Giancarlo Antognoni, winning Serie A titles and the European Cup. His most iconic moment came at the 1988 European Championship final, where he scored a spectacular volley against the Soviet Union that helped the Netherlands win the tournament. Van Basten won the Ballon d'Or three times (1988, 1989, 1992) and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992. His career was sadly cut short by ankle injuries that forced his retirement at age 32. After playing, van Basten transitioned to coaching, managing the Dutch national team from 2000 to 2002. His legacy as a footballer remains unmatched, influencing generations of strikers.
