Manfred von Richthofen
WWI flying ace 'Red Baron', 80 aerial victories
Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892–1918), known as the 'Red Baron,' was a German fighter pilot and commander who became the most successful flying ace of World War I, with 80 confirmed aerial victories. Initially serving as a cavalry officer, von Richthofen transferred to the Imperial German Air Service where he quickly demonstrated exceptional piloting skills and tactical acumen. He famously painted his aircraft bright red, a choice that enhanced his legendary status and made him instantly recognizable in the skies. Von Richthofen commanded the elite Jagdgeschwader 1 wing, known as the 'Flying Circus' due to their varied bright colors, and his leadership inspired fierce loyalty among his pilots. His memoir, 'The Red Fighter Pilot,' remains a classic account of aerial warfare. Von Richthofen was killed in action in April 1918 under disputed circumstances, but his legacy endures as one of history's most celebrated military aviators and a symbol of chivalry in modern warfare.
