Man Ray

Man Ray (August 27, 1890 – November 18, 1976) was an American visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker best known for his contributions to the Dada and Surrealist movements. Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, he adopted the shortened name 'Man Ray' early in his career. He pioneered experimental photographic techniques, most famously the 'rayograph,' a cameraless photographic process that became a cornerstone of avant-garde art. Ray moved to Paris in 1921, where he became a central figure in the surrealist scene, creating provocative works that challenged conventional aesthetics. His photographs, paintings, and films explored themes of dreams, chance, and the subconscious. Beyond the visual arts, Ray was a prolific inventor and experimenter who continuously pushed the boundaries of his medium. His work influenced generations of artists and photographers, and his legacy extends across multiple disciplines including fashion photography, fine art, and cinema. Ray returned to the United States during World War II and eventually settled back in Paris, where he remained creatively active until his death.
