Malvina Hoffman

Malvina Hoffman (1887-1966) was an American sculptor, painter, and anthropologist whose work bridged art and ethnographic documentation. Born in New York City to a wealthy family, Hoffman studied under the renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin in Paris, where she refined her technical skills and artistic vision. She is best known for her monumental sculpture series 'Races of Mankind,' which was commissioned for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and consisted of over 100 bronze sculptures depicting human diversity across the globe. Hoffman traveled extensively to Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific Islands to study and sculpt people from different ethnic backgrounds, creating detailed, lifelike representations. Though her work was groundbreaking in its artistic ambition, it reflected the problematic anthropological frameworks of her era regarding racial classification. Despite these historical limitations, Hoffman's technical mastery and dedication to documenting human diversity made her a significant figure in both sculpture and early twentieth-century anthropology. Her legacy includes important contributions to art history and a complex record of how artists engaged with race and culture during the interwar period.
