Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean

Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean (October 29, 1979 – April 2, 2020) was an American attorney, social justice advocate, and environmental activist who was a member of the prominent Kennedy political family. The daughter of diplomat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (first female lieutenant governor of Maryland) and David Townsend, Maeve grew up in a family committed to public service. She earned her law degree from Harvard Law School and worked as an attorney focused on human rights, environmental protection, and social justice issues. McKean was known for her commitment to progressive causes and her efforts to continue the Kennedy family legacy of public service. She served on boards and advisory committees for various nonprofits and was particularly passionate about environmental sustainability and access to justice for marginalized communities. Tragically, Maeve and her 8-year-old son were lost in a canoeing accident in the Chesapeake Bay in April 2020, cutting short a life dedicated to service. Her death was mourned throughout the activist and political communities, with colleagues recognizing her as a dedicated advocate for the voiceless. Though her life was cut short, her legacy of commitment to justice and environmental stewardship continued to inspire her family and colleagues.
