Mae West

Mae West (August 17, 1893 – November 22, 1980) was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter, and performer who became one of the most influential and controversial entertainers of her era. Rising to fame on Broadway in the 1920s with plays that pushed sexual and social boundaries, she transitioned to film in the 1930s, becoming a major star during Hollywood's Golden Age. Her films, including 'She Done Him Wrong' and 'I'm No Angel,' showcased her distinctive husky voice, curvaceous figure, and razor-sharp wit. West was famous for her double entendres and sexually suggestive one-liners, which challenged the strict moral codes of the time and contributed to the implementation of the Motion Picture Production Code. She was also a savvy businesswoman who controlled much of her own creative output and insisted on script approval. Throughout her long career, West maintained her independence and refusal to conform to Hollywood expectations of femininity. Her legacy includes pioneering discussions about female sexuality, agency, and comedic timing in cinema. She remained a cultural icon and symbol of glamour and irreverence until her death at age 87.
