Mabel Ethelreid Normand (November 9, 1892 – February 9, 1930) was an American silent film actress, comedian, and director who became one of the earliest female stars of cinema. Born in Staten Island, she began her film career in 1909 and quickly established herself as a talented comedienne known for her slapstick humor and engaging screen presence. Normand worked with legendary director D.W. Griffith and collaborated with Charlie Chaplin, creating some of early cinema's most memorable moments. She was among the first women to direct films, demonstrating remarkable artistic vision behind the camera. At the height of her fame in the 1910s and 1920s, Normand was one of the film industry's biggest stars, commanding significant salaries and creative control. Despite her talent and popularity, her career was marred by scandals and personal tragedies, including involvement in a murder investigation that damaged her reputation. Her health declined significantly, and she died at age 37. Despite her short life, Mabel Normand's pioneering contributions to cinema, particularly in comedy and female directorial work, secured her legacy as a trailblazer in film history.
