Lute Olson (September 22, 1934 – August 20, 2023) was an American college basketball coach best known for his transformative tenure at the University of Arizona from 1983 to 2008. Born in Mayville, North Dakota, Olson built the Arizona Wildcats into a powerhouse program, winning 24 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and capturing the national championship in 1997. His coaching philosophy emphasized defensive excellence, disciplined ball movement, and player development. Olson's teams made six Final Four appearances and won 11 Pac-10 conference titles during his 34 seasons in Tucson. Beyond statistics, Olson earned respect across college basketball for his integrity, consistency, and ability to recruit top talent while maintaining academic standards.
