Lucas Cranach the Elder
Renaissance painter, court artist, Reformation propagandist
Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553) was a German painter, printmaker, and entrepreneur who became one of the most prolific and successful artists of the Northern European Renaissance. Born in Kronach, Bavaria, he established himself as a court painter in Vienna before moving to Wittenberg, where he became the official painter to the Saxon court and remained for over 45 years. Cranach was deeply connected to Martin Luther and the Reformation, producing propaganda woodcuts and paintings supporting Luther's movement while maintaining diplomatic neutrality. His workshop was highly organized and productive, creating hundreds of works across multiple mediums including panel paintings, altarpieces, engravings, and woodcuts. His style blended Italian Renaissance compositional techniques with Northern European attention to detail and color. Beyond painting, Cranach was a shrewd businessman who established a printing press, pharmacy, and brewery, accumulating significant wealth and influence. His legacy includes not only his artistic innovations but also his role as a bridge between the Italian and Northern Renaissance traditions, influencing generations of European artists.
