Lorne Greene
Ben Cartwright on 'Bonanza'
Lorne Greene (1915–1987) was a Canadian-American actor and singer who became an icon of American television. Born Lyon Himan Green in Ottawa, Ontario, Greene initially pursued a career in acting and radio before gaining international fame as Ben Cartwright, the patriarch of the Cartwright family, in the long-running NBC western series 'Bonanza' (1959–1973). His portrayal of the dignified, wise father figure made the show one of the most popular television series of its era. Greene's distinctive deep baritone voice and commanding screen presence also led to a recording career; he released several albums and had unexpected success with novelty records. Beyond Bonanza, he appeared in numerous films and television series, including a notable role in the original 'Planet of the Apes' (1968). Greene was also active in Canadian broadcasting and helped establish Canadian television's reputation for quality programming. His career spanned over five decades, and he remained active in entertainment until his death. Greene's portrayal of Ben Cartwright established a template for the wise patriarch figure in television and influenced how father figures were depicted in subsequent decades.
