Lonnie Donegan

Anthony James Donegan (December 29, 1931 – November 3, 2002), known professionally as Lonnie Donegan, was a Scottish-born British singer, guitarist, and musician who became a pioneering figure in popular music during the 1950s and 1960s. Donegan is widely credited with popularizing skiffle, a genre that blended American folk, blues, and country music with accessible instrumentation, making music-making democratic and inspiring thousands of young people to pick up guitars. His 1956 recording of 'Rock Island Line,' a traditional American folk song, became an international hit and topped the charts in multiple countries. Subsequent hits like 'Putting on the Style,' 'Cumberland Gap,' and 'Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour' established him as a major entertainment force. His influence on British popular music was profound—many musicians, including members of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, cited Donegan as an early inspiration. Though skiffle's commercial peak was relatively brief, Donegan's legacy as a gateway artist who democratized music-making remains significant.
