Lolo Soetoro

Lolo Soetoro (September 1, 1935 – March 2, 1987) was an Indonesian geologist who became widely known as the stepfather of Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th President of the United States. After marrying Barack Obama Sr.'s widow, Ann Dunham, in 1966, Soetoro became a father figure to young Barack Obama during crucial formative years. The family relocated to Indonesia in 1967, and Obama spent approximately four years there from ages six to ten, attending local schools and being exposed to Indonesian culture, Islam, and diverse worldviews. Soetoro worked as a geologist and later in business, and by many accounts was a stable, caring stepfather who exposed Obama to a different cultural context than he would have experienced in the United States. His influence on Obama's early development and cultural awareness has been noted by biographers as significant in shaping the future president's worldview and ability to navigate different cultures. Though Soetoro died in 1987 when Obama was a young man, his impact on the president's childhood and perspective remained influential throughout Obama's life.
