Liz Cheney

Elizabeth Lynne Cheney (born July 28, 1966) is an American politician and attorney who served as the U.S. Representative for Wyoming's at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. Born into a prominent Republican family—her father is former Vice President Dick Cheney—she initially pursued a career in law before entering politics. Cheney was elected to Congress in 2016 and quickly rose through Republican leadership, becoming Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference in 2019. Her career took a dramatic turn following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, when she voted to impeach President Donald Trump, becoming one of only ten Republicans to do so. This vote led to her removal from House leadership by her own party. Cheney subsequently joined the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack, where she played a prominent role in investigating and publicly reporting on the events surrounding the attack. Her principled stand against Trump and the Republican mainstream cost her politically—she lost her reelection bid in 2022 by a historic margin. Despite her political setback, Cheney has become a significant figure in broader American political discourse, respected by many for her commitment to constitutional principles and democratic norms.
