Liliana Segre
Holocaust survivor, Italian Senator for Life, Holocaust education advocate
Liliana Segre (born September 10, 1930) is an Italian Holocaust survivor and politician who has become one of Europe's most respected witnesses to the Holocaust. Born in Milan to a Jewish family, she was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau at age 13, where she remained imprisoned until the camp's liberation in 1945. She was among only 25 Italian children who survived the camp. After the war, Segre rebuilt her life, becoming a successful businesswoman before devoting herself to Holocaust education and testimony. In 2018, at age 89, she was appointed as a Senator for Life by the Italian President, making her the oldest first-time senator in Italian history. Through countless speeches, interviews, and educational initiatives, Segre has worked tirelessly to combat Holocaust denial, antisemitism, and the resurgence of fascism in Europe. Her dignified presence and powerful testimony have made her a moral authority and symbol of resilience, particularly for younger generations learning about this dark chapter of history.

Thinking about the name
Liliana
Latin origin
“Liliana is the Latinate elaboration of the lily-derived root, meaning 'of or pertaining to lilies.' The name has deep roots in Italian, Spanish, and Polish traditions while achieving global appeal. It combines botanical symbolism—purity, renewal, majesty—with romantic femininity and European elegance. The name feels both classic and contemporary.”
