Lew Alcindor

NBA legend, all-time leading scorer, cultural icon

Biography

Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. (born April 16, 1947), known professionally as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, is widely regarded as one of basketball's greatest players and most influential athletes of the 20th century. Born in New York City to Curt Alcindor, a jazz musician, and Christine Alcindor, Kareem displayed basketball prodigies from his teenage years. Playing for UCLA's Bruins (1966-1969) under coach John Wooden, he led the team to three consecutive NCAA championships while developing the unstoppable skyhook, a graceful arc shot that became his trademark. Drafted first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969, he won his first NBA championship in 1971 at age 24. Over a 20-season career spanning Milwaukee and Los Angeles, Kareem won six championships, three MVP awards, and became the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points—a record that stood for 39 years. Beyond basketball, Kareem became a cultural icon and civil rights advocate, converting to Islam in 1968 and adopting his new name in 1971. His intellectual depth, measured activism, and refusal to conform to expectations made him a compelling figure beyond sports. Since retirement, he has been a prominent humanitarian, author, and ambassador for global cultures.
