Leta Stetter Hollingworth

Psychology pioneer, gifted education research

Biography

Leta Anna Stetter Hollingworth (May 25, 1886 – November 27, 1939) was an American psychologist and educational pioneer who made groundbreaking contributions to the study of gifted children and intelligence testing. Born in Nebraska, Hollingworth earned her Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University at a time when few women pursued advanced degrees in science. She conducted pioneering research on the psychological characteristics of gifted children, establishing many of the foundational principles still used in gifted education today. Hollingworth was particularly interested in understanding how gifted children develop and the educational implications of high intelligence. Beyond her research, she was a vocal advocate for women's rights and equality in education and the workplace, challenging the prevailing scientific misconceptions about female intellectual capacity. Her work at Teachers College, Columbia University, established her as a central figure in educational psychology. Hollingworth published numerous influential papers and books, including 'The Psychology of Subnormal Children' and 'Gifted Children: Their Nature and Nurture.' Though her life was cut short by cancer at age 53, her legacy as a foundational figure in gifted education and as a pioneering woman scientist remains profoundly influential in educational psychology and child development studies.
