Leon Panetta

Leon Edward Panetta (born June 28, 1938) is an American politician, government official, and military strategist who has held some of the highest national security positions in the United States. A California native and former congressman who served 16 terms representing his district, Panetta transitioned into executive branch service under President Bill Clinton as Director of the Office of Management and Budget and White House Chief of Staff. He gained prominence for restoring fiscal discipline during the 1990s. Under President Barack Obama, Panetta served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2009 to 2011, overseeing major counterterrorism operations including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. He then moved to the Department of Defense as Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013, where he navigated the complexities of the financial crisis, military strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan, and emerging cyber threats. Known for his pragmatic approach and bipartisan credibility, Panetta represents the name's association with public service and principled leadership.
